River Plate 2-1 America

UnionCityBlue

A great game to watch, especially in the first half, but ultimately nothing to show for it. America took the lead in the 15th minute after Salvador Cabanas headed home after some nice work by 'El More'. From then it looked odds on America would add a second as Rodrigo Lopez broke free for a one on one with Carrizo in the River Plate goal. It was highly entertaining end to end stuff. Ortega hit a post, Abreu looped a header on to the crossbar. River were dangerous on the break but America looked secure enough with Sebastian Dominguez anchoring the defence, unfortunately, due to injury, he was replaced by Armando Sanchez in the 35th minute. Three minutes later and Falcao slotted home for River after a nice cushioned headed lay off from Abreu. All in all at half time, at 1-1, things were looking good. Not so the second half. The ineffective Rodrigo Lopez was replaced by the equally ineffective Federico Higuain and America began to lose their way, as River began to dominate the play. Armando Navarette was in excellent form denying River on at least five occasions. Coach Romano was ejected from the touchline in the 68th as things began to heat up. It took until the 93rd minute on the last play of the game for Ariel Ortega to win it for River after a failed clearance attempt from Cervantes. Seconds earlier 'Gringo' Castro and Falcao had been shown red for fighting. If there is anything positive to take from this defeat then I think it would have to be the play of Juan Calos Mosqueda, El More showed he has the heart and can play in the really big games. So now we have all four teams in Group Five on 3 points. Next up for America in the Copa Libertadores is the Peruvian team Univesidad San Martin on March 13th at the Azteca. And I will be there !

America 0-1 Santos

UnionCityBlue

It has been five years since Santos Laguna has taken all three points at the Azteca. What hurts this time is the lone goal of the game was scored by former America striker Matias Vuoso, who in his time with America was, simply put, awful. The reaction after the goal from Vuoso showed no repect for his former club and only incensed America fans. This was the home league debut of new coach Romano, who has some serious motivational work ahead of him in order to turn things around. This is our third league defeat in a row and is simply unacceptable. On a side note, this was the first game in club history where the team wore the 'CA' logo as part of the players numbers. The style is the same as has been used the previous three tournaments, there has just been the addition of the club badge.

America 2-1 Universidad Catolica (Chile)

UnionCityBlue

America got off to a fantastic start in this years edition of the Copa Libertadores. A 2-1 victory was taken over a well organized Universidad Catolica team. Salvador Cabanas opened the scoring for America five minutes before half time. America had plenty of chances, most falling to Rodrigo Lopez. Unfortunately they were all wasted, prompting new boss Ruben Omar Romano to substitute the Uruguayan forward in the 76th minute, bringing on El More to bring something new to the attack. The Chileans had equalized in the 70th minute from a stunning free kick that Armando Navarette had no chance with. As time was running out it appeared that America would fall victim to a counter attack as they pressed everyone forward with the hopes of taking all three points. Fortunately, Federico Higuain, who had replaced Richard Nunez on the hour mark came up trumps for America. With virtually the last kick of the game Higuain curled the ball across the box and into the net sending all Americanistas wild with delight. His first goal for the club, Romano's first victory as DT of America and our first 3 points of this years Copa Libertadores.

Atlas 1-0 America

UnionCityBlue

A very uninspiring performance in what has turned out to the last game coached by Daniel 'El Ruso' Brailovsky. A goal from Ulises Mendivil in the seventh minute was all that separated the teams.

America 0-1 Morelia

UnionCityBlue

Morelia came to the Azteca behind two losses, so maybe America took them too lightly. Luis Landín Angel, put the team from Michoacan ahead in the 29th minute and the reality is that they were rarely troubled after that. Well ordered and disciplined, Morelia simply played to those strenghts against a very limp looking America team who rarely connected and got anything going from the midfield, Salvador Cabanas, seemingly playing alone up front, was rarely involved. And we all know where America's goals usually come from.

Tecos 1-2 America

UnionCityBlue

After a bad start to Clausura 2008, America appear to be putting early problems behind them, two victories in a week and it seems like business as usual. Salvador Cabanas, the Paraguayan Punisher, has been instrumental in both games and is endearing himself to the America faithful more and more with each performance.

America 2-0 Pumas

UnionCityBlue

America picked up their first win of the Clausura yesterday with a 2-0 triumph over Mexico City rivals Pumas. A much better showing from America in this game with two excellent goals from Richard Nunez and Salvador Cabanas. Pumas never really troubled thanks to a solid defensive display from Diego Cervantes and Sebastian Dominguez.
